Dr. Ruben P. Cowart, president and CEO of Syracuse Community Health Center, Inc., was recently appointed to the Syracuse Housing Authority's board of commissioners by Syracuse Mayor Matthew J. Driscoll. The appointment will be for a five-year term ending in 2013. This appointment directly correlates with Cowart's background, experience, strong governmental and organizational relationships as well as 30 years of experience working with and serving the underserved in the Syracuse community.
Since founding Syracuse Community Health Center in 1978, Cowart has served in major leadership positions with numerous local, state, and national organizations.
Currently Cowart is chairman of the Syracuse Planning Commission, chairman of the Governor of New York Medical Advisory Committee, board of director of the National, Regional and State Association for Community Health Centers, SUNY Upstate Medical University Council Member and Crouse Hospital Board of Directors.
"It is a privilege to be asked and appointed by Mayor Driscoll to the Syracuse Housing Authority board of commissioners," said Cowart. "Syracuse Housing Authority's mission parallels that of Syracuse Community Health Center whereas the services both organizations provide are for the underserved residents in our community. With similar missions and focus, having been afforded the ability to work with Syracuse Housing Authority in this way, reinforces my strong commitment to the citizens of Syracuse and allows me to assist, in a different venue, those who are disadvantaged."
