H.W. Smith School hosted a grand opening celebration today of its new school-based health center, which opened this year. It is the sixth such center in the Syracuse district.

About 125 people attended the lunchtime event, said Pamela Hunter, director of public and government relations for the Syracuse Community Health Center. H.W. Smith's RotaKidsclub named the center F.I.S.H. which stands for First Intervention for Student Health. The room is decorated with fish and a water theme.

The school health center provides primary and preventive medical, dental and mental health services to students. They are a collaboration between the school district and community center.

The other five Syracuse centers are in Fowler High, Delaware Academy Elementary, Dr. King Elementary, Dr. Weeks Elementary and Bellevue Academy Middle Schools. Those locations were selected for their high rate of low-income families.
