America's Health Center Heroes
CHCANYS
Summer 2008
The theme of this year's National Health Center Week is America's Health Care Heroes, an opportunity to highlight some of the heroes across the state. By sharing their stories, we not only acknowledge the great work these individual and others like them are doing in health care, but also hope to inspire others to become healthcare heroes as well.
Dr. Lawrence Reiter/Syracuse Community Health Center
Dr. Lawrence Reiter, DDE, has been with the Syracuse Community Health Center for 11 years. He completed his undergraduate education at SUNY Stonybrook, attended NYU Dental School and completed a one-year GPR residency at Coler Memorial Hospital. He is a member of the American Dental Association and the Academy of General Dentistry.
Dr. Reiter left a Binghamton clinic for the position at Syracuse Community Health Center in 1997 and has never looked back. "I like working with people who really need the services," said Dr. Reiter. "Why should people be neglected because they lack the resource to access good dental care? I feel we really make a difference in people's lives with the work we're doing."
Dr. Reiter sees a variety of patients as young as two years old and as old as 86 doing what he calls the "bread and butter of dentistry." He likes the fact that he is not pressured to sell more services than people need. He also appreciates the flexibility that his position offers so he can care for his five year old son Adam and his eight year old son Joshua, who has special needs. "It's an understanding, family environment and it really makes a difference for our family, " he said.
Dr. Reiter believes that it's important to be honest and courteous with patients and to community with them. "Above all, said Dr. Reiter, "you need to treat them with respect."
